Load Range to Ply Rating Converter

E is a 10-ply rating class, not ten belts. It is not a number of pounds by itself.

LT265/70R17 E is load range E → 10 ply rating. How many pounds that tire carries is on the load index, not in the letter E.

What it does

Maps load-range letters B–N to ply rating using USTMA Table 1 for commercial truck and bus tires. SL and XL are inflation marks, not ply ratings.

How to use it

Type C, D, E, F, SL or XL as printed on the sidewall.

How to read the result

Ply rating is a capacity class from when tires were cotton. A modern 10-ply-rated radial may have two steel belts. Pounds of load come from the size plus the load index (and, for LT/ST, the inflation table we do not republish). Never read “Load Range E” as “more capacity at the old PSI.”

What this does not calculate

Letters do not convert to pounds without a size. C1 vs C2 passenger marks use different reference PSI at the same construction story — we do not flatten that into one number.

Does not output a load in pounds or a recommended PSI. Use Load index and Load capacity check.

Questions

Is XL the same as Load Range C?
No. XL is a passenger extra-load inflation mark. C is a light-truck load range. Do not mix them as if they were the same class.
Where are the pounds?
Load index on the same page family. Capacity check if you are comparing a replacement against a GAWR.
