Tire Load Index Chart & Speed Ratings
The number before the letter (91H) is load. The letter is speed. Both have to meet the door-jamb spec.

Speed symbols
- Q · 160 km/h / 99 mph — 160 km/h (99 mph). Common on winter tires.
- R · 170 km/h / 106 mph — 170 km/h (106 mph).
- S · 180 km/h / 112 mph — 180 km/h (112 mph). Common family-car rating.
- T · 190 km/h / 118 mph — 190 km/h (118 mph).
- H · 210 km/h / 130 mph — 210 km/h (130 mph). Very common touring rating.
- V · 240 km/h / 149 mph — 240 km/h (149 mph).
- W · 270 km/h / 168 mph — 270 km/h (168 mph).
- Y · 300 km/h / 186 mph — 300 km/h (186 mph).
- (Y) — Over 300 km/h (186 mph). The exact limit is on the tire maker's spec sheet.
- ZR — Legacy mark for over 240 km/h. Modern tires add W, Y or (Y) after the load index.
What it does
Full ETRTO load-index table (0–150) in kg and lb, with axle and four-tire totals, plus the standard speed-symbol table.
How to use it
Enter the load index from the sidewall. Optionally enter a target weight (per tire or per axle) to see if the index covers it.
How to read the result
Never go below the load index on the vehicle placard. Extra capacity is fine; less is a safety failure. Dual ratings (121/118) mean single vs twinned — we look up the number you type, we do not invent the dual. Speed rating is the max speed at that load, not a performance promise.
What this does not calculate
Capacities assume the tire is at the inflation in the maker’s load table — usually the max cold psi on the sidewall, which is not the vehicle’s recommended psi. LT tires in dual fitment use the second index.
Does not replace the door-jamb placard or a weigh-scale ticket.
Questions
- Can I use a higher load index?
- Yes, if the size, speed rating and rim are correct. A higher index is extra capacity, not a problem.
- What if XL or Extra Load is on the tire?
- XL (reinforced) passenger tires carry more load at higher inflation. The load index already reflects that. Do not mix XL and standard on the same axle.
- Is H faster than V?
- No. H is 210 km/h, V is 240 km/h. The alphabet is not in order through the high-speed symbols.

- PSI to kPa to Bar ConverterThe sidewall number is a maximum. The door sticker is what the car wants. Convert units here — do not mix them up.
Estimate — not a fitment approval.
