Odometer Correction Calculator
The needle is a different tool. This one is about the mile counter — oil changes, warranties, resale.
- The tire rests on the ground, so half of any diameter change goes downward and only the other half lifts the vehicle.
- A diameter one inch larger raises the vehicle half an inch, and takes half an inch of fender clearance away.
- That same change shifts the speedometer and revolutions per mile, because the tire covers more ground per turn.
- Width is a separate problem: a wider tire can rub even when the diameter is perfect.
What it does
Uses the ratio of overall diameters to report real miles traveled per 100 miles indicated. Same geometry as Speedometer error; this page leads with distance, not speed.
How to use it
Enter the size the odometer was calibrated for (usually stock) and the size on the vehicle now.
How to read the result
A taller tire under-reports distance: 100 indicated miles are more than 100 miles on the road, so service reminders arrive late in real life. A shorter tire over-reports. GPS is the easy check. The same ratio also changes indicated speed — that table lives on Speedometer error.
What this does not calculate
Unloaded geometric diameter, not loaded rolling radius. Ignores wear, squat and aftermarket calibrators. Assumes the stock size was the calibration size.
Does not reprogram the ECU or tell you which calibrator to buy.
Questions
- Is this the same math as speedometer error?
- Yes, the same diameter ratio. Speedometer error answers “how fast am I really going?” This page answers “how far did I really go?” Use both; they are written as sister tools, not copies.
- Will my warranty care?
- Warranties and service intervals are about real distance. If the odometer is short, you are late. We cannot speak for a specific manufacturer’s policy.
