RPM at Speed Calculator

How fast the engine is turning at 65. Diameter and gears, not a guess from a forum chart.

65 mph, 3.73, 1.00 trans, 31.6" tire: a little over 2,500 rpm — the textbook check of the formula.

What it does

RPM = (mph × trans × axle × transfer × 63360) / (60 × π × diameter_in). The constant 63360/(60π) is about 336.135; we do not round it to 336 in silence.

How to use it

Enter a tire size (or diameter), axle ratio, the gear you are in (1.00 = direct), optional transfer-case ratio (1.00 on the street), and mph.

How to read the result

Taller tires drop RPM; numerically higher axle gears raise it. Loaded rolling radius is a bit shorter than our unloaded diameter, so real RPM is a little higher. For “what gear puts me back,” use Gear ratio.

What this does not calculate

No torque-converter slip, no shift maps. Highway 4Hi is transfer = 1.

Does not read your OBD. Does not pick a cam or a stall converter.

Questions

Why not just use 336?
336 is a rounded teaching shortcut. 63360/(60π) is the exact conversion from mph and inches. We keep the exact one.
What do I put for overdrive?
The ratio of that gear, often 0.70 to 0.85. If you do not know it, leave 1.00 and you are looking at direct drive.
